Motors & Armatures, Inc. was founded in 1946 by Sol Chernoff. At an earlier time, he was informed by his future father-in-law that the young man had to learn a trade if he was to receive permission to marry his daughter, Rachel. It was the 1930s, and Sol Chernoff chose the new field of +electric iceboxes+ to develop his expertise. To prove his business acumen, Sol later took his thirteen years of experience as a refrigeration technician and service manager and started a repair shop specializing in motors for air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and appliances.

In 1958, Sol Chernoff began to realize that the nascent air conditioning business provided an opportunity for selling genuine general replacement parts, previously only available from surplus dealers. By 1958, the company had outgrown its loft in lower Manhattan and moved to a 2,500 square foot building in Long Island City. The demand for relays and motor protectors was growing rapidly, driving the company to establish a new entity called Relay Division & Armatures. The activities of the company that Sol began 58 years ago migrated from motor repair to parts distribution, and in the early 1960s, developed a line of products marketed as MARS, an acronym for Motors & Armatures Replacement Sales. In 1963, Motors & Armatures introduced the MARS potential relay which became world famous, helping the company establish its national and international reputation for quality among manufacturers, wholesalers, and service contractors.

Sol's son, Edward, joined the business in 1973 and, by 1982; Sol handed the reigns of the company to him. Edward Chernoff now serves as President and CEO. Today, MARS distributes the products of world class manufacturers such as General Electric, Texas Instruments, and Siemens, along with many other fine companies. The years of growth have led the company to design an award winning, highly automated, 200,000 square foot national distribution center. This computerized warehouse facility in Earth City (St. Louis), Missouri is the most modern and efficient operation in the HVAC/R industry. The company+s corporate headquarters in Hauppauge, New York is the home for its Customer Service, Information Systems, and Accounting departments as well as its executive offices. MARS continues to focus on delivering the same quality and service in which Sol Chernoff took such great pride.
