A heavy-duty electro hydraulic has solved an expensive and repetitive valve operating problem. The valve - an Edward Class 2500 14 x 12 x 14in high-pressure no return globe control valve on boiler feed water pump discharge service - was motorized with an obsolete electrical actuator that was no longer supported by its manufacturer. The actuator arm was regularly causing self-inflicted damage to its drive bush and gearbox when the valve was operated, forcing the station to repair it on an annual basis. Electrical actuators mount on valves which, in response to a signal, automatically move to a desired position using an outside power source. Rotary electric actuators are used in the electric power industry, high-power switching gears, and packaging applications. Linear electric actuators are well-suited for operating in tight tolerances. Electromagnetic actuators generally fall into two categories, reaction mass actuators, also called proof mass actuators that produce a force by pushing against a suspended internal mass. The uses for these two actuator types differ, but the core design and manufacturing capabilities are similar. Reaction mass actuators are normally used at frequencies near to or greater than the primary suspension resonance frequency.
