White Rodgers: Transformers

White Rodgers Transformers, White Rodgers Controls

White Rodgers is one of the industry leaders, regarding heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration control systems. Their high quality products and reliable services have extended worldwide and now they are looked upon as one of today’s greatest HVAC manufacturers that provides services and products at an international scale. Their series of excellent transformers and relays had a lot to do with the company’s ascension in the last few years, as these parts become more and more important to households, buildings, commercial and industrial applications. Let’s take a look at a transformer’s role in a HVAC system and what White Rodgers has to offer in this field.

A transformer is an electromagnetic device used for changing or modifying the voltage of the alternating current electricity used by your system. Each and every transformer has a primary coil and one or several secondary coils. The primary coil’s main goal is to receive electrical energy directly from the power source and then couple it to the secondary coil or coils by means of a changing magnetic field. The energy appears as an electromagnetic force across the coil, and if a load is connected to the secondary the energy is transferred to the load.

The voltage at which electric power is used in motors and HVAC system is less than that, which is required for distribution. It is necessary to constantly increase the voltage at the generating station to the value required for transmission, a process which is called "to step up" the voltage. Then a similar process is used to lower it at the point of consumption to the values required by the heating, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration components, which is called "step down". The transformer is what makes these changes in voltage.

White Rodgers transformers include 5 types of devices, each with their distinct nomenclature, features and characteristics. The first series is called the White Rodgers 90-T40S1 thru 90-T75C3 secondary class 2 energy limiting transformer series. This series includes the following models: the White Rodgers 90 T40M1 Multi-Mount 120V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40M2 Multi-Mount 120/208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T50M3 Multi-Mount 120/208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40S1 Multi-Mount 120V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40S2 Multi-Mount 208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40S3 Multi-Mount 120/208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T50S3 Multi-Mount 120/208/240V screw terminal Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40F1 foot mount 120V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40F2 foot mount 208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40F3 foot mount 120/208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer, the White Rodgers 90 T40-24 foot mount 120/208/240V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer and the White Rodgers 90 T100C foot mount manual reset 120V Primary class 2 energy-limiting transformer.

White Rodgers offers 2 wall plug-in transformer models: the 5401A-1 primary 120V, 60 Hz, 0.14A, Secondary 24VAC, 10VA and the 5402A-1 primary 120V, 60 Hz, 0.31A, Secondary 24VAC, 25VA models. These wall plug-in transformers are isolation step down devices and feature a sealed tamper and impact resistant case, a non-polarized plug-in blade, trouble free maintenance, isolation from the power source and output terminations with screw terminals.

Next in line, the skeleton design transformers from White Rodgers offer various standard configurations of step down transformers. They feature energy limiting mechanisms and design which is unaffected by momentary short circuits or power outages. They can work in a maximum temperature setting of 150 Fahrenheit degrees and most models have an output rating of 40 VA (except for the White Rodgers S82A 310 skeleton design transformer, which has an output rating of 20 VA).

Last but definitely not least, the WR/RBM Type 91 series of transformers includes the following three models: the White Rodgers 90-340 24 volt transformer, the White Rodgers 90-341 115/120 volt transformer and the White Rodgers 90-342 208/240 volt transformer models. These transformers are TPDT semi-enclosed (two pole double throw) and are usually found in vending machines, heating and air conditioning applications and general purpose switching. They have an operating temperature range of –40 up to 130 Fahrenheit degrees. Their mechanical life holds 1 000 000 operations with a ratio of 120 operations per minute, whilst their electrical life can withstand 100 000 operations with a ratio of 6 operations per minute. These transformer series’ voltage is 24 VAC with a coil cycle of 50 or 60Hz. Their small weight of approximately 6 oz makes them ideal for use in smaller switching and transformation applications.
