Johnson Control Dampers

Ever since Johnson Control Inc was founded back in the year 1885, the Johnson Controls Company has been a leading manufacturer, service provider and installer of all types of HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) controls and systems. Being a global leader in the HVACR controls industry, the Johnson Control company is a single source for a large variety of different products, tools, accessories and system components, including: electronic, electromechanical and pneumatic control products and all types of sensors. The ventilation and air conditioning departments of the Johnson Control Inc Company are both extremely well developed, offering standard-setting products and services.

Johnson Control Damper

All ventilation or air conditioning systems require dampers to function correctly. The damper is a “window” of solid material (usually iron plating or plastic) that is used to control the airflow of your ventilation system or air conditioning application. It regulates the draft and intake of fresh air and it is extremely effective in controlling airflow for temperature zoning systems. A damper can be either automatic or manually operated, the first one winning more and more ground in home, commercial and industrial appliances.

On manual dampers, you can choose to regulate the airflow yourself, although it will require more attention than an automatic damper, which can regulate the flow depending on what you program it to. Dampers work as a whole with actuators, thermo control valves, thermostats and ventilation components, so you should choose each component carefully and make sure it is compatible. Better yet, you can choose an entire ventilation system so you can be sure that there will be no compatibility issues.

The Johnson Control Inc offers several types of dampers

  • Johnson Control Volume Control Dampers
  • Johnson Control Balancing Dampers
  • Johnson Control Round Dampers
  • Johnson Control Zone Dampers
  • Johnson Control Fire Dampers
  • Johnson Control Smoke Dampers

Dampers can also be used as of any combination of the above list. Because dampers sometimes need to be of unique sizes and types, to fit in your ventilation system, Johnson Controls Inc company offers the possibility to order customer unique dampers with your specifications. Some dampers can even be manufactured and shipped the next day after it has been purchased.

Johnson Control Volume Control Dampers

The volume control dampers come in a variety of types and sizes. They are categorized under a few distinct descriptions:

  • The Johnson Control Class I volume control dampers, which are designed with high performance airfoil blades with a very tight closure and high pressures.
  • The Johnson Control Class II volume control damper consists of two-piece performance blades and features a tight closure and lower pressures or velocities.
  • The Johnson Control Class III volume control damper is formed from single piece standard blades and it is used as a normal shut-off in return air or balancing applications and it cannot be used for outside ventilation.

Other models can hold different blade types, ranging from the 304 Stainless Steel Triple-Vee Blades, Galvanized Steel and Extruded Airfoil Shape, Extruded Aluminum Blades and Frame, to the Thermal Isolation and Extruded Airfoil Shape models designed for tight shut-offs.

Johnson Control Balancing Dampers

Balancing dampers are designed to control air flow in commercial or light industrial applications. They cannot be used in some systems, because they do not have any seals, thus they are not rated for tight shut-off. Balancing dampers are used to balance air flow in dynamic HVAC applications and they can be ordered with a factory-set manual locking quadrant, or without it, whichever model suits you better.

Johnson Control Round Dampers

Round dampers refer to the shape of the damper, and can apply to any kind of damper, including air flow measuring dampers, balancing dampers, control dampers, pressure relief backdraft dampers, fire dampers or smoke dampers. Actually the most common use of the Johnson Control round damper is in smoke detection or fire prevention units, that require an aesthetic solution to provide safety.

Johnson Control Fire and Smoke Dampers

Fire and smoke dampers can be either ordered separately or they can be purchased as a combined damper, which covers both fire prevention and smoke air flow handling.

Johnson Control Fire dampers automatically sense fires inside your HVAC system and they close themselves even if the fan is still running, preventing more serious damage to the system. The fire damper has a fusible link that measures temperatures and if these temperatures reach the top limit (which is either 165°F, 212°F or 285°F, depending on the model you selected) the link releases a high-torque spring that slams the blades, allowing not even a single current of air to pass through, thus providing total protection.

Johnson Control Smoke detectors on the other hand, restrict the spread of smoke in your HVAC system, when it is shut down due to a fire. That’s why it is better to have both smoke and fire dampers in a single unit, because they basically have to work together anyway. Another use for separate smoke detectors could be the control of the movement of smoke inside a building, in order to avoid health hazards in HVAC systems that operate in high-smoke areas.

Depending on your needs, you might want to consider ordering a Johnson Control damper to aid your ventilation and air conditioning system.
